PEDIATRIC AND PREGNANT PATIENT

Children and Chiropractic

Why should children have chiropractic care? The question is simple. If you as a parent want your child to thrive mentally and physically to his or her greatest potential, then chiropractic care is not an option; it is an essential component to your child’s life.

Stresses or irritation to the nervous system can cause health concerns such as colic, ear infections, sleep disturbances, allergies, asthma, skin rashes or conditions, and nursing difficulties. These are just a few of many issues that can be the result of trauma to the developing nervous system. Trauma may occur during the birth process, as your child is learning to crawl or walk, falls and slips; or just by long hours in an infant seat or baby bouncer.

Physical trauma is not the only way your child’s nervous system may become disrupted. Emotional stresses, toxicity of the environment or multiple rounds of antibiotics

Chiropractic care removes the interferences in the nervous system allowing the body to naturally heal itself and function in a greater state of health.

Chiropractic During Pregnancy

Chiropractic care is not only for the infant and child but also for the mother before, during and after her pregnancy. It benefits the mother by allowing her to be more comfortable and in a higher state of health, which directly affects the condition of the child.

Chiropractic has been shown to aid the mother’s back and pelvic structures in preparing for the stresses of labor and birth as well as to help ease back pain during gestation. The mother’s spine and pelvis undergo many weight changes as the baby grows; thus, her nervous system has a greater chance of becoming compromised.

During the birth process, the mother’s body endures physical, emotional and mental stress; thus her body needs to be able to perform at its highest function to endure and recover from this incredible event. “Chiropractic care throughout pregnancy restores balance to your pelvic muscles and ligaments and, therefore, leads to safer and easier deliveries for you and your baby. Additionally, the chiropractic adjustment removes interference to the nervous system allowing your uterus to function at its maximum potential. Published studies have indicated that chiropractic care does in fact reduce labor time,” reports Dr. Jeanne Ohm, D.C., F.I.C.P.A., a practicing DC; an internationally known lecturer on chiropractic care in pregnancy and infancy; a post-graduate instructor for numerous chiropractic colleges; and the author of many papers on pregnancy, birth, children and chiropractic. Following the birth, the mother’s body continues to experience a transformation. She must adapt hormonally, physically, mentally and emotionally to a new lifestyle. During this extreme adaptation and stage of growth, it is imperative for her to be healthy and happy. Chiropractic care allows the nervous system to function at its maximum potential, providing the greatest chance of optimal health for both the mother and baby and creating a successful adaptation for the new family.

Adjusting Procedures

Many parents are concerned about the safety of a child being adjusted. It is extremely safe and beneficial to your child’s spine. When adjusting a pediatric patient, Dr. Reifschneider uses a very specific, small force to treat their spine. Chiropractic adjustments are adapted to a child’s age and weight; therefore, the adjustments are both accurate and effective. Specific chiropractic adjustments are very safe, especially since care is individually based only after a gentle complete health history and chiropractic examination has been performed.
